Letter of Motivation

I am motivated:

Because, in retrospective, the bachelor's program was a way for me to see what kind of opportunities Digital Media gives me. It was a lot of fun and I was able to look into many different fields, ranging from Computer Science, to Web Development, Media Theory, Game Development, Human Computer Interaction, Media Design and many more. The interdisciplinary aspect is what I love about Digital Media. The topics that caught my eyes were all so different, that I would like to get a chance to explore some of them in more detail. I want to learn how I can apply my skills, that I have obtained from my studies in projects that are bigger and closer to reality and real life problems.

Therefore, I am especially interested in fields that include Entertainment Computing, Human Computer Interaction and Data Science and Visualization. I want to learn and find out about the possibilities these topics can offer me and especially the society. I am interested in change and equality, to fight unjust computer algorithms and biased machine learning. I want to learn about Serious Gaming and application in the real world. The Bachelors program only scratched the surface of possibilities, but to find my way to help, I need a proper education and an environment to practice.

I am currently working at the University Bremen as a tutor for "Grundlagen der Medieninformatik", because I like explaining study matter that has been and still is interesting and fun for me. I could imagine working again as a tutor, or a working student or even as a lecturer in the far future at a University. I am motivated to learn a lot a more about more complex topics and share my knowledge and experience with others.

And this is my portfolio.

(Please accept me for the Digital Media masters programm)

Content

Game Projects

Over the period of my studies, I had the oppurtunity to work on various smaller game projects. Due to these projects, I collected knowledge and skills in C# and C++, and Game Engines like Unity and Unreal Engine.

Pixel Art & Animations

Pixel art is my passion. I create most of my artworks for fun or for game projects. I use a software called Aseprite, with which I taught myself how to draw and animate in pixel sytle.

Blender

I worked with Blender for the first time in my second semester for "Medieninformatik 2", but I learned to love it in my last semester for a project in an interdisciplinary module called "Digitaler Spaß".

Illustrations & Sketches

I made several illustrations and sketches for various courses and personal projects. I used Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and pen and paper to create them.

Blender

Blender Projects from "Digitaler Spaß"

Impossible Lightbulb

In 2020/2021 I took the interdisciplinary module "Digitaler Spaß". Our task was to create a small fun interactive moment in digital space, so I made two small animations using Blender.

1. Sketching

The first sketch of the project was meant to be a "self destructing machine". The machine was supposed to visibly destruct itself on activation.

2. Modelling

I started modelling a lightbulb an a hammer for the installation and tried out animating them with the help of Blenders "Cell Fracture"-Addon.

3. Compositing and Animating

I made the rendering smoother and had so much fun animating the scene, that I had the idea to make a mini video-series. The finished animations can be watched below.

Finished Animations

Lightbulb with Twists

For the video "Lightbulb with Twists" I modelled an installation in the same perspective but with different outcomes. The twists are:

-"Fake Bulb": The hammer hits the lightbulb, and the glass breaks revealing a new light bulb under it.

-"Lights Out": The hammer hits the lightbulb, which turns off the light without the glass breaking.

-"Evasion": The lightbulb dodges the hammer, shortly before it hits it target.

-"Bounce Away": The lightbulb behaves like a rubber ball on impact.

-"New Bulb": The hammer breaks the lightbulb and a new bulb sets itself on the socket.

-"Bounce": The hammer hits the lightbulb, resulting in it bouncing on the socket.

"Hammer": The hammer hits the lightbulb and shatters itself.

Dramatic Lightbulb

Based on a Video from YouTube I did another animation for my lightbulb. In the video a truck drives torwards a bollard, with dramatic music, but the camera perspective changes just before the impact over and over until the video ends.

In my animation I wanted to have the same frustating effect. Thus, the hammer swings torwards the lightbulb, while dramatic music plays in the background. But, before the hammer hits it the camera perspective changes. The anti-climactic surprise effect is what makes the Animation "fun".

Projects from the Fabrication Lab University Bremen

In the summer semester 2019 I attended the course "Lernen und Forschen im FabLab". For this module I illustrated two graphics, which were later printed/engraved. This was the first time for me to work with Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Silhouette Studio and a plotter and lasercutter. I am interested in doing more advanced projects like this in the future.

1. Illustrating and engraving a plate

The first project was a sign I made for friends. It was supposed to be a fun small project to learn Illustrator and get used to vector graphics. I copied the font from an existing alcohol brand, added my own lettering and decorated the sign with anchorsand cereal ears.

1. Illustrating and engraving a plate

I edited the illustration in Inkscape to prepare the engraving and cutting. I chose a black-golden acryl plate and tested out different sizes and engraving strengths.

1. Illustrating and engraving a plate

This is the finished plate. I gifted all the different versions to friends.

2. Illustrating and plotting for custom merch

In this project I designed custom merch for a small metal band. I traced the lettering "Off The Bones" into a vector graphic, adjusted the placement and decorated it with broken bones.

2. Illustrating and plotting for custom merch

I edited the band logo using Silhouette Studio and plotted it and pressed it onto a t-shirt.

2. Illustrating and plotting for custom merch

Lastly I plotted another bigger broken bone and added it to the back of the t-shirt.

Various Arts and Crafts/Sketches/Edits

This is a collection of sketches/edits i did for the modules "Skill Workshop: Zeichnen für Interface- und Produktdesign" and "Drawing and Composition". I used Adobe Photoshop for my edits.
